Rann of Kutch itinerary for 4 days

A 4-day Rann of Kutch trip plan in which each day stays in one part of Rann of Kutch, in route order: Bhuj; The White Rann; Kalo Dungar and Khavda; and Mandvi.

The White Rann is seasonal in a way few destinations are: the salt flats are underwater through the monsoon and only dry out from around November. The Rann Utsav tent city runs across that window, and Bhuj is the base for the surrounding craft villages.

4-day Rann of Kutch itinerary, day by day

Day 1: Bhuj

Arrive in Bhuj. The old capital of Kutch and the base for the craft villages. The palaces are side by side in the old town.

  • Aina Mahal
  • Prag Mahal
  • Kutch Museum

Day 2: The White Rann

Check out and move to Dhordo today. North through the craft villages to the salt flats, which are dry from around November to February. Be on the salt for sunset, and again for moonrise near full moon.

  • Nirona rogan art village
  • Mawa sweets at Bhirandiyara
  • White Rann at sunset
  • Rann Utsav tent city evening

Day 3: Kalo Dungar and Khavda

The highest point in Kutch, with a view across the Rann, and the potters of Khavda on the way back.

  • Kalo Dungar viewpoint and Dattatreya temple
  • Khavda pottery village

Day 4: Mandvi

An hour south of Bhuj on the coast: the beach, the palace and the yards where wooden dhows are still built by hand. Keep the end of the day free so the journey home is not rushed.

  • Vijay Vilas Palace
  • Mandvi shipbuilding yard
  • Mandvi Beach

Where to stay

Stay a night in Bhuj and one at Dhordo, in the Rann Utsav tent city or a bhunga (mud hut) resort near the White Rann. A permit for the Rann is issued at the Bhirandiyara checkpost.

When to go

November to February, during the Rann Utsav, is when the salt flats are dry and accessible, and full-moon nights are the most sought-after dates. Outside that window the Rann is flooded or too hot to visit.

Getting there

Bhuj (BHJ) is the nearest airport and railhead, about 80 km from Dhordo where the White Rann is accessed.
